My Experience in Geneva's BSU

Campus Life

I remember my freshman year when the Black Student Union (BSU) was only in its beginning as a club. Back then the BSU was only a small dozen of us and we would meet once a week at the apartments. The BSU was started when Breland Brown '20 felt as if her and the other Black students on campus didn’t feel heard and didn’t have a safe space to be themselves on campus. She created the group in order to help the African American students not only feel safe and heard, but to encourage them to stay at Geneva.

Throughout the years, the BSU has grown to amazing heights and now is an essential component for African American students at Geneva, and an integral club for all students on campus. On a week-to-week basis the BSU talks about issues that we face daily as Black students on campus, and issues that goes beyond Geneva. On a weekly basis, the BSU also celebrates and engages in African American culture, and through these experiences we share our culture to every student on campus to create new and meaningful relationships.

The majority of my best memories through my years at Geneva have been because of the Black Student Union. I served as the treasurer, social media coordinator, and vice president of the club. In the BSU, I created lifelong relationships. The club was like family. It is a space open to all, a place where culture is shared, voices are heard, and lasting bonds are formed.

The BSU is open to all students. Joining the BSU will grant you friendships for life and memories that you will never regret. Get involved in the regular meetings or watch for the next BSU-hosted event on campus!
