Have you ever heard of the Geneva Women? You may have heard them mentioned as the sponsors of the annual Broadway Revue shows, or their name might be completely new to you. This month, I had the pleasure of speaking with Mrs. Louise Copeland, president of the Geneva Women. As I stepped into the President’s Dining Room, a quiet peace enveloped me, far removed from the excited busyness of the college cafeteria. A circle of women gathered around the tables in glad company, enjoying cookies and punch while listening to the presenter of the day. Simple and ordinary...yet full of beauty. Though I was only in the room for a short time, I was struck by the inner joy that radiated from these women, who have spent many years walking with the Lord.
Founded in 1978, the Geneva Women seek to further the vision of Geneva College through their faithful support of worthy student activities and through keeping alumni, retirees, and friends up to date on the current happenings of the College. Through careful consideration, the group offers financial support to various student organizations across campus. Students can request funds, and the group will provide aid as they see fit. Each year, they sponsor Broadway Revue, a collection of shows where students have the opportunity to publicly perform selections from Broadway musicals, allowing them to develop stage presence and learn more about the art of drama. The Geneva Women have provided funds for music scores and t-shirts for Grace Notes, a small women’s singing ensemble. They have assisted with funding the Genevans' annual singing tour to various parts of the U.S.
Other activities supported by the organization include nursing and engineering groups, a local community outreach program led by students majoring in communication disorders, and the Bibles that are given to incoming freshman each year. The Geneva Women desire to “help a budget along” by “giving money toward student organizations that would otherwise not be funded.”
The social aspect of the group is a sweet opportunity for members to encourage each other as well as the student body. Since the Geneva Women meet regularly throughout the year, members have the chance to cultivate friendships and pray for each other. This past year, the Women have participated in several luncheons where they heard from President Troup and learned about the College’s work with military students and Geneva’s graduate and online programs.
They look forward to a lunch in April that will recap their assistance with the speech pathology program at Geneva. Mrs. Copeland is grateful for the way the Lord has led the Geneva Women to help the College in various capacities, and she hopefully anticipates the continuation of the group in their faithful, behind-the-scenes work.
