Joel Shannon was the editor-in-chief of one of Geneva College's leading student-news teams. Under his leadership, The Cabinet won several Keystone awards and was also declared a Pacemaker Finalist.
Of his time at Geneva, Joel writes,
The chance to run a weekly publication in college for two years was probably the best career development I could have asked for. As editor of The Cabinet, I learned management, editing, visual and digital skills that helped prepare me for a journalism career beyond what would have been possible in the classroom alone. I’m so thankful to Geneva College for giving me the opportunity and to all the staff and faculty who supported me all the way.
Some of Joel’s award winning stories include: “Geneva By The Numbers,” “Lebanon County Teachers' Salaries,” “Cost of Homeschooling: School Districts' Perspective” and “Considering the Campus Store.”
From Geneva, Joel went on to work for the Beaver County Times as a digital media specialist. There he designed editorial pages and documented digital-first best practices. He now works at the York Daily Record as an audience analyst innovation editor. And recently, Joel won the “Edith Hughes Emerging Journalist Award,” which has been called the “Rookie of the Year” award for journalism in PA.
Thankfully, Geneva has been able to welcome Joel back to campus on several occasions to speak with students. He shares post-graduation advice and encourages all to join the award winning news team on campus.
