After almost two years of preparation, the Geneva College women's lacrosse team is ready to go ahead of the program's first-ever season of play this spring.
The women are scheduled to play their first match on Wednesday, February 26th, at La Roche University down in Pittsburgh. Following the match with the Redhawks, Geneva will play host to Division II West Virginia Wesleyan College on March 1st for the Golden Tornadoes' home opener. All the GTs' home matches this season will be played at Wright Fields in Chippewa, PA.
The Golden Tornadoes were picked to finish tenth in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) preseason poll that was released Thursday afternoon, receiving ten points in the vote. Last year's PAC champion, Grove City, was picked to finish in first with 76 points, and the Wolverines received four of the ten available first-place votes. W&J was selected second, receiving 72 points and three votes for first place, and the Presidents were followed up by Chatham and Allegheny, who received two and one first-place votes, respectively.
Head coach Liz Geyer leads the first-year Geneva team and is excited to get the program off the ground. Geyer is no stranger to either the PAC or directing a new squad, as she took the reigns of Bethany College's women's team when the Bison began their first year of play in the 2019 season. After coaching at Bethany for five years, Geyer has since had a two-year hiatus from PAC play, but her experience in the conference will serve Geneva well when the women begin their season in two weeks.
Sophomore attacker Julianna Easley was named a Player to Watch this season by the PAC, as well as sophomore Mara Fowlow and freshman Taylor Robinson. Fowlow expects to see time at goalkeeper as well as in the midfield, while Robinson will likely split her time between the midfield and attack.
