Beaver Falls, PA – The Geneva College Volleyball Golden Tornadoes defeated the Notre Dame College Eagles in five set fashion; 25-17, 22-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-12. The home opener victory starts Geneva in the win column with an overall record of 1-0.
After Geneva earned a quick 25-17 game one advantage, the Eagles kept the next four games tight, allowing no more than a three point lead for either team. Game five was no exception, as the Golden Tornadoes’ two point lead didn’t last long watching the Eagles pull away with a five point streak lifting them to 5-2 edge over Geneva. Senior outside hitter Grace Hayes’ (Westminster, MD/Westminster) kill equalized the scoreboard at 10 points apiece. Keeping the lead at 13-11 then 14-12 to a final 15-12, Geneva sealed its first win of the season.
Three Golden Tornadoes earned double digit kills led by Hayes with 15, junior middle hitter Marissa Naples (Cortland, OH/Lakeview) with 14 and junior outside hitter Erica Hughes (North Jackson, OH/Jackson Milton) earned 13 kills.
On the defensive side of the ball, senior libero Gabrielle Dickson (Brookfield, OH/Kennedy Catholic) earned an outstanding 41 digs.
As a team, the Golden Tornadoes earned seven blocks.
Up next, the Golden Tornadoes will be at the Bluffton Tournament starting on Friday, September 9 against Kenyon at 4 p.m.
