Gettysburg, PA- McKala King (Uniontown, OH/Lake) led Geneva from the service line in two 3-0 finals at the Gettysburg College Tournament. Geneva defeated York College 25-17, 25-17, 25-8 and Neumann 26-24, 25-11, 25-21.
“In the third set we got a 10-0 start over York thanks to McKala’s serving including six aces,” said co-head coach Curt Conser. “She served really effectively.”
Erica Hughes (North Jackson, OH/Jackson Milton) earned nine kills, Grace Hayes (Westminster, MD/Westminster) five kills, each only appearing in the first two sets.
“Grace had a great two sets with five kills on nine swings with no errors.”
In addition to King’s dominate service; Rachel Tuck (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock Secondary School) also served five ace serves while contributing three blocks.
“Our serve came alive and our block came alive too.”
As a team, Geneva finished the match with ten blocks, six of which came from Olivia Test (Negley, OH/Heartland Christian).
Rachel Netherland (Aliquippa, PA/Central Valley) set for 15 assists.
On the defensive side of the ball, Gabrielle Dickson (Brookfield, OH/Kennedy Catholic) tallied 14 digs.
“Against Neumann, McKala did the same thing she did to York; she gave us a 7-0 start from the service line.”
Hughes, Hayes and Netherland led the team in kills; Hughes with ten, Hayes nine, Netherland with eight.
Marissa Naples (Cortland, OH/Lakeview) racked up 20 assists in the three set match.
Dickson worked for 15 digs, King also reached double digit digs at 12.
“It was a fun match to watch, especially in the third set,” said Conser. "It was a set full of intense long well played rallies.”
Host, Gettysburg College, went 1-1 in the day’s work. Geneva, now 2-1, will face Gettysburg at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 5) followed a match against Mt. St. Mary (NY) at noon.
