Beaver Falls, PA – The Geneva College men’s soccer team looked like it was headed for a home victory on Saturday as the Golden Tornadoes took a 2-0 lead into the final 15 minutes of the match. Fredonia State rallied for three goals in ten minutes, but it was Geneva’s Sean Bernardi (Butler, PA/Butler) that got the last laugh with a goal in the 90th minute that salvaged a 3-3 tie for the Golden Tornadoes.

Geneva (4-1-2) opened the scoring in the 14th minute on a goal by Alexander Rosenbaum (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg). The score remained a 1-0 Geneva advantage into the halftime break. Seven minutes into the second half, Abel Carleton’s (Darlington, PA/Beaver County Christian School) flying header doubled Geneva’s advantage on a great feed from Josh Brenize (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) Fredonia began its comeback with a goal in the 79th minute and then managed to tie the game five minutes later. The go-ahead goal from Fredonia came in the 84th minute before Bernardi’s heroics in the last 50 seconds of the game off a throw in by Gib McCraken.

Fredonia outshot Geneva 29-16 but it was Luke Nolan’s (Darlington, PA/Beaver County Christian School) eight saves that kept Geneva in the match. “Our schedule is full of quality teams and they are definitely a very good team. We played very well in the first half and started off extremely well in the second half to go up 2-0. I give them a lot of credit for battling back but we have to be able to put teams away when we get a 2 goal lead.” said Coach Gary Dunda.

The Golden Tornadoes head to LaRoche next Wednesday before returning to Merriman Complex next Saturday for a primetime homecoming showdown with top 20 foe John Carroll University at 7 pm.
