Beaver Falls, PA - The NCCAA East Region 2014 Fastpitch Softball All-Region Team was released Tuesday, April 29, 2014. Geneva impacted every aspect of the regional team starting at the top with head coach Van Zanic honored as the Coach of the Year. For the past 12 seasons, Van Zanic has handled the head coaching duties for Geneva′s softball team. During his tenure, Geneva has won more games than in any other 12 year stretch in school history. Geneva′s current 2013-14 record of 21-14 improves Zanic′s career mark to 324-212. Under Zanic′s direction, the seasons′ senior class has won over 100 games during their careers as Golden Tornadoes.
Sophomore starting pitcher, Samantha Johnson (Murrysville, PA / Franklin Regional) was selected as the East Region′s Player of the Year for her outstanding work on the mound. Johnson finished the regular season pitching more innings than any other pitcher in the Presidents′ Athletic Conference (PAC) (165.0) and finishing with the most wins in the PAC with a 17-8 record after striking out 106 batters (#2 in the PAC). In addition, Johnson batted .281, with 25 hits, 12 runs batted in, and four stolen bases.
Four of the 12 members of the 2014 NCCAA East Region team are from Geneva′s roster including pitcher Samantha Johnson, infielder Ashley Davis (New Middletown, OH / Springfield Local), infielder Christina Fuqua (Derwood, MD / Richard Montogomery), and designated player Andrea Hinds (Montrose, PA / Montrose). Laura Beck (Canfield, OH / Canfield) claimed honorable mention for her work in the infield and offensive presence at bat.
