Geneva College senior honors students prepared poster presentations of their honors research projects and displayed them in the lobby of Old Main during the last week of the spring semester. On the final day of classes, these students were available to discuss their research with the campus community during an open reception.
Students in Geneva′s honors program are required to develop research projects during their senior year in order to graduate as an honors scholar. They choose a topic of personal interest in their field and faculty advisors provide guidance throughout the process. As in previous years, students present their full research projects to a few members of the faculty and campus community upon completion at the end of the semester.
Poster presentations were added to the project this year for the purposes of highlighting student excellence and sharing a condensed form of the projects with a greater audience. "We had the idea this year to honor the students′ work," said graduate assistant Kara Lee Mantinaos. "In addition, the poster presentation also provided the students an opportunity for professional development."
"The project was fun because I was able to pick anything that interested me in my field," said Laura Troup, a senior history and English major. Troup wrote a biography of her great aunt Dr. Jeanette Troup, a medical missionary who discovered the viral hemorrhagic fever known as Lassa Fever when working in Nigeria.
While Troup enjoyed many aspects of the honors program throughout her college career, including the honors humanities sequence and cultural events, she said, "The research project was my favorite part. It′s the climax of the honors program."
