Waynesburg, PA - It has been a similar story for the Geneva College men′s soccer team this season. Starting slow in the first half and working its way to a victory late in games. On Monday night, the formula worked again with a 2-1 victory over Waynesburg University. The Golden Tornadoes used a pair of second half goals to move their record to 13-2-2 while the Yellow Jackets fell to 5-12-1.
After a scoreless first half that saw Geneva control the majority of possession and field position, the Golden Tornadoes took advantage of a pair of opportunities in the second half. David Gerlach opened the scoring with a header that found the back of the net from a long throw in from Austin Petrie in the 76th minutes. It didn′t take Geneva long to build on that lead when Jake McCracken took a feed from Josh Mann and extended the lead to 2-0 just two minutes later. McCracken′s goal ended up being the game winner when Waynesburg put an end to Evan Biedenbach′s shut-out bid with its only goal of the game in the 83rd minute. The Yellow Jackets were never able to make a serious threat to tie the game and Geneva got back into the win column and extended its current unbeaten streak to four straight after a 3-3 tie against Westminster a week ago.
"It′s always tough to win on the road," said head coach Gary Dunda. "We didn′t play our best soccer, but we did enough to get a victory and that is the bottom line. We have enjoyed a very good season and hopefully we can cap off the regular season on Saturday."
Geneva will indeed try to end the regular season on a winning not when it hosts Saint Vincent College at Merriman Athletic Conference on Saturday at 7 pm. The Golden Tornadoes will then wait for word as to when and where the NCCAA East Regional tournament will take place.
