Not So Happy New Year

Latrobe, PA - Geneva′s women′s basketball team did not get the result it was looking for in the first action of the new year. The Golden Tornadoes watched Saint Vincent open a 41 point second half lead before falling 75-52. Geneva dropped to 4-5 on the season while the Bearcats improved to 8-3.

Geneva was never competitive as Saint Vincent opened up a 46-19 lead at the half after the Golden Tornadoes turned the ball over 17 times in the first 20 minutes. Geneva managed just seven first half field goals and shot 22% in the first half. For the game, Geneva shot 26% from the field and turned the ball over 27 times.

With just under six minutes to play, Geneva trailed Saint Vincent by 41 points but made a valiant comeback in the final minutes to trim the final deficit to only 23 points. Rachel Barry led Geneva with 15 points and Liz DePietro added 12 points on 4-8 shooting from three-point range. Christine Carugati scored only two points but pulled down a career high ten rebounds.

Saint Vincent used a balanced scoring attack with five players in double figures including 12 points each from Maura Wahl and Mario Barroffio. The Bearcats shot 40% from the field, including six three point field goals.

Geneva will host Fredonia College at Metheny Fieldhouse on Monday at 4 pm. The Golden Tornadoes will get back into conference play on Wednesday at Chatham and at home next Saturday against Waynesburg.
