GENEVACRUISES PAST CHATHAM, PICKS UP
WIN#6 ON THE SEASON
Beaver Falls, PA - If you would look at the scoreboard at the end of the women′s soccer match between Geneva and Chatham, it may not be a complete indication of how one-sided the match was throughout the night. The Golden Tornadoes came away with a modest 3-1 victory, but clearly had the better of the play from start to finish. The victory helped Geneva improve to 6-3-3 on the season while Chatham remained winless at 0-12.
Geneva out shot Chatham by the decisive margin of 31-3, but it was Chatham goalkeeper Mary McMahon that kept the match close. The Golden Tornadoes picked up all three goals in the first half. Geneva got on the board when Melissa Brooks notched her first goal of the season when she headed in a perfect cross from Melissa Byrdy in the 13th minute. Fifteen minutes later, Geneva struck again on Kelsey Anderson′s break-a-way goal. Anderson took a lead pass from Rebecca Shaw and got behind the defense and then beat the goalkeeper to extend Geneva′s lead to 2-0. With five minutes remaining in the half, Shaw and Anderson switched roles as it was Anderson′s pass that freed up Shaw to pick up her fourth goal of the season.
Chatham, which had scored just one goal all season coming into the game, matched that total with a goal by Kristie Brannon four minutes into the second half. Chatham only managed three shots in the match as Lauren Londino picked up her sixth victory in goal.
Geneva will host Saint Vincent College at Merriman Athletic Complex on Friday night.
