SHAW ON THE MARK WITH GAME WINNER
AGAINST W & J, UNBEATEN STREAK REACHES SIX
Beaver Falls, PA -Geneva′s women′s soccer team has enjoyed a very impressive turnaround season thus far into the 2008 campaign. Up until now, it has been a nice story about a team on the rise. On Wednesday night, the Golden Tornadoes made several teams sit up and take notice as the Golden Tornadoes picked up an impressive 1-0 victory over Washington & Jefferson, which is one of the perennial powers in the Presidents′ Athletic Conference. Geneva′s victory moved its overall record to 5-2-3, including an unbeaten streak that has now reached six matches. Geneva′s women have not lost a match since September 6th.
Neither team could find the net in the first half, although Washington & Jefferson controlled the play by out shooting Geneva 10-2 in the first 45 minutes. The second half looked very similar to the first half, with the exception of Geneva finding the net for the only goal of the night. In the 81st minute, Rebecca Shaw raced down the left wing and was able to fire a shot past W & J goalkeeper Jackie Foltz for the only score of the match. Geneva managed just two shots on goal for the game, but Shaw′s shot turned out to be the only offense the Golden Tornadoes would need.
Lauren Londino, who is putting together a career season in goal, picked up her sixth shut-out of the season by making nine saves including several clutch efforts in the final half.
Geneva will travel to Westminster on Saturday night before returning home next week for matches against Chatham and Saint Vincent.
