SENIORS GO OUT IN STYLE IN
DOUBLEHEADER WIN OVER ST. VINCENT
Beaver Falls, PA - Geneva′s softball team played their final games of the year and came away with 5-2 and 10-2 victories over St. Vincent College. The Golden Tornadoes ended their season with an impressive 29-13 overall record. Geneva will say good-bye to seniors Jackie Anthony and Bridget Beachy, who have made significant contributions to the team in their tenure.
In game one, Ashley Archer ended up with six strikeouts, two earned runs, and a complete game victory. Jackie Anthony led off with a hit for Geneva and would reach home in the first after an Amy Pearce RBI. St. Vincent went on to match that first inning effort with a run to tie the game. Geneva would strand five runners before being rewarded for their efforts in the sixth inning. The Tornadoes opened up the inning with three runs thanks to RBIs by Adriane Blake, Kim Slater, and Bridget Beachy. St. Vincent managed one more run in the sixth but the game was out of reach after a fifth run scored for Geneva in the seventh.
The Geneva bats were hot in game two, as the Golden Tornadoes ran away with the game in five innings. Geneva scored two runs in the first, led by Michawn Rich and Amy Pearce RBIs and never looked back. Geneva strung together four runs in the third, capped off by a Leanne Abate homerun, to give Geneva a 7-0 lead. St. Vincent found two runs in the fourth inning, only to be met by three more Geneva runs. Rebekah Wahl closed out the game in the top of the fifth, after allowing only three hits, to get the win. Geneva′s offense tallied thirteen hits and posted ten runs in four innings work. Leading the way was Michawn Rich who was three for three with two triples, a double, and three runs scored. Kim Slater and Amy Pearce chipped in with two hits and an RBI for each. Jackie Anthony had two hits and stole every base in the fourth inning on her way to breaking the record for career stolen bases with 77 in her three year career.
The Golden Tornadoes came up one win shy of their third consecutive 30-win season, but they did end the season with seven consecutive victories. Five reasons for the 2008 success were rewarded on Saturday as All-Conference performers in the PAC. Senior Jackie Anthony, along with juniors Michawn Rich, Amy Pearce and Ashley Archer, along with freshman Rebekah Wahl were all honored by the Presidents′ Athletic Conference.
