BATS LEAD GENEVATO VICTORIES
OVER FRANCISCAN
Steubenville, OH - Geneva′s softball team had eight days off prior to Wednesday evening′s twin bill against Franciscan. The lay-off didn′t seem to affect the Golden Tornadoes as they rolled to a pair of 21-2 decisions over the Barons. The doubleheader sweep moved Geneva′s overall record to 27-13.
Geneva got off to similar starts in both games by plating seven runs in each first inning. In game one, Kim Slater capped the big inning with a two-run single. Geneva batted around in the second inning with a ten-run frame. Amy Pearce, who had three hits in the game, launched her 13th home run and first grand slam of the season. Pearce had five RBI′s in the game, which helped her set the single season and career record for RBI′s. Geneva had 15 hits in the game, including three each from Pearce, Slater and Michawn Rich. Stephanie Wagle went the distance for her second victory of the season. She allowed five hits and struck out five for the win.
Game two saw freshman Rebekah Wahl pick up her 13th victory of the season and first career hit. Wahl, who struck out nine batters, was more excited about her first hit, which turned out to be a solo home run in the fourth inning. Teammate Anjelica Marsh also hit her first collegiate home run, which was a grand slam to cap an 11-run third inning. Kelsey Evans had three hits in the victory, along with teammates Allison Hartwell and Bridget Beachy. The Golden Tornadoes banged out a total of 23 hits in the game two victory.
Geneva will close out the 2008 season on Saturday when it travels to Saint Vincent College to take on the Bearcats in a PAC doubleheader beginning at 1 pm.
