GIANT KILLERS COME UP SHORT, GENEVAFALLS
TO FIFTH RANKED THOMAS MORE
Beaver Falls, PA - Geneva women′s head coach Ron Galbreath has been carrying around the box score from Geneva′s 22-point loss to Thomas More in mid-January. The legendary head coach and his Golden Tornadoes were handed another opportunity to knock off the undefeated Saints on Saturday, but came up on the short end of a 64-57 decision. The loss ended Geneva′s five-game winning streak and dropped the Golden Tornadoes to 19-4, while Thomas More improved to 23-0 with the victory.
Geneva′s first half looked a lot like the first half four weeks ago. The Golden Tornadoes managed just five field goals in the first 20 minutes and shot only 23% from the field. The Golden Tornadoes stayed in the game from the foul line as they were 22-27 from the line for the game. Trailing by 13 points at the half, Geneva could never make a serious threat at the undefeated Saints. Thomas More had won 13 consecutive games by double-digits, but could not put Geneva away.
The Golden Tornadoes battled back to within six points at 61-55 with 40 seconds to play, but could not get any closer. The Saints got a great game from junior Jayme Thiem. Thiem was the only Thomas More player to reach double figures with a game high 28 points on 10-19 shooting from the field.
As for the Golden Tornadoes, Renee Rawding scored a team high 21 points, while Allyson Clarke collected her 18th double-double of the season with 19 points and 14 rebounds.
Geneva will begin the final week of the regular season with a road game at Thiel on Wednesday night. The Golden Tornadoes will close out the regular season next Saturday night when they host Westminster College.
