NETTERS DROP TWO TO OPEN 2007 SEASON
Beaver Falls, PA - It was not exactly what Geneva co-head coaches Wendy Smith and Curt Conser had drawn up for the start of the 2007 season. The Geneva coaching duo working side by side for the first time watched the Golden Tornadoes drop a pair of matches at the Mt. Union College Tournament to open the new campaign.
In game one, Geneva fell 3-0 to John Carroll in a match that clearly showed it was the first for a very youthful Golden Tornadoes team. Dropping games by scores of 30-20, 30-17, 30-13, Geneva did not have much to smile about. Freshman Adriane Blake led the offense with eight kills to go along with a pair of blocks and 19 digs. Meanwhile, freshman Laura Zerbe chipped in with six kills.
Game two, although it ended in the same result, clearly gave the Golden Tornadoes something to build upon. Geneva dropped a 3-1 decision to Gettysburg College by scores of 30-26, 30-24, 26-30, 30-26. Blake and Elizabeth Fisher each had ten kills. Brandi Snavely combined for 63 assists in the two losses, while also throwing down five service aces in the loss to Gettysburg.
Geneva will continue its tournament weekend at Mt. Union on Saturday with its first match coming against Adrian College at 9 am, which will be followed by a seeded play-off match later in the afternoon. Geneva opens the 2007 home season on September 10th against Point Park University.
