Covey Cup: A Recent Tradition at Geneva College

If you’ve ever been to Geneva College in the fall, you’ve almost definitely heard of Covey Cup. Unbeknownst to many, this isn’t the full name. Covey is actually short for Covenanter. The Covenanter Cup was started in 2011 by a previous Residence Life director. If you’re a math major, this may have you counting fingers and asking yourself, “Doesn’t that make this the tenth Covey Cup?” Now I’m no Professor Dambach, but I feel confident enough to say that it is indeed (at least) the tenth annual, perhaps even the eleventh, Covey Cup, and it starts on Friday, Sept. 17, 2021.

In honor of this exciting milestone, here are ten reasons the recent tradition called Covey Cup is important to Geneva.

“Covey Cup was the first time I got to interact with upperclassmen as peers and I loved it; day full of fun.” -Miguel Delacruz ‘24
“Seeing the Richardson boys walk into Covey Cup all dressed up, with a flag topped with a lampshade, music playing, is something I won’t forget!” -Sam Steeles ‘22
“My top two memories would be Pearce winning my freshman year and then last year, Richardson house competing in every single event. Despite losing, that was still cool to see.” -Nick Schmieg ‘23
“My experience last year with Covey Cup was a lot of fun. You get to do so many activities that include everyone and everything. Last year I competed in Mario Kart and, though I didn’t make it through, I still had the best time!” -Caitlin McAlister ‘24
“It gives me a whole day to cheer for my residents and be their biggest hype man.” -Natalia Carazas ‘22
“Last year, I was in quarantine for two weeks and I was released right before Covey Cup. Participating in Covey Cup was magical because it was the first time I was able to be with other people for over two weeks. There’s nothing like a good friendly competition with other people as they cheer you on and you cheer them on, especially because we all have good attitudes and the ability to laugh with each other and grow closer through making fun memories together.” Ryan Eisenhuth ‘23
“My favorite moment was playing nine square. Clearcechardson (Clarke, Pearce, and Richardson) just barely lost to Yarms (Young and Arms), but it was still super fun.” -Mattigan Burleigh ‘24
“I love the idea of Covey Cup just because of the camaraderie that it influences. Watching a whole residence hall flock to a sync-swim or Mario Kart tournament and cheer their fellow hall-mates along is something I fondly look upon.” -Michael Guile ‘22
“I played Mario Kart for Covey Cup last year and it was a good time. I played with a bunch of guys that play a ton of Mario Kart on the Wii so it was pretty competitive.” -Ethan Smith ‘24
“I have fond memories from Freshman year for sure. I don’t think I actually signed up for anything except maybe World Cup soccer, but then Clarke ended up needing more people for ultimate frisbee and I had a blast with that. My favorite part was watching synchronized swimming though, I had seen it in the Olympics but not as a dancing event. I remember laughing my head off at the upperclassmen, while also thinking they were really cool. Every year after that, I was always sure to attend, but my freshman year always held a special place in my heart.” -Autumn Hunkele ‘21

Clearly, this recent Geneva tradition, Covey Cup, has left its mark on a new generation of students, and hopefully it will continue to impact others for years to come. Students can get involved with this year’s event by talking to their RAs or the Center for Student Engagement.
