Computing facilities are available to faculty, staff, and students of Geneva College for the purpose of instruction, research and other activities as defined by the President or Vice President of Operations.

The Student Code of Conduct addresses offenses related to personal conduct, properties and operations of the College and therefore applies to computer use as well.

The use of Geneva College′s Computing facilities is a privilege not a right. This privilege may be revoked or suspended without notice for violations of usage procedures.

Since it is impossible to list all offensive uses of the system, it should be governed by the following general principle. Anything the user does (intentional or not) that causes disruption of any campus computing facility, system or network will result in immediate account suspension and/or termination for a period of at least one week. Network personnel reserve the right to define disruptive behavior. If a user is in doubt about the effect of some operation, they must obtain advance permission from a member of Technology Services before trying it.

Specifically, the following behaviors are considered offenses related to utilization of the computer network facilities:

1. Turning off power to critical equipment.
2. Modifying files in the user or other accounts (particularly history files that must not be modified).
3. Sending unsolicited e-mail (SPAM, defined as mail addressed to more that 15 people). Any email message that is addressed to more than 15 individuals is subject to review by Technology Services, and could lead to possible suspension of e-mail privileges.
4. Using computer facilities for purposes other than research or instruction. (Limited game playing is considered instructional). Computing facilities and services are not to be used for commercial purposes or personal gain.
5. Abusing or misusing the computer facilities so as to cause damage, program disturbances, or harassment to other persons.
6. Borrowing or lending a computer account.
7. Obtaining the password of another person in order to use their accounts.
8. Using electronic media to harass or threaten other computer users, or to display offensive or obscene language or pictures.
9. Impersonating another person via electronic media (spoofing).
10. Copying, reading, appropriating, altering, or destroying the files or output of another individual or the College without permission.
11. Making unauthorized duplicates of copyrighted software. (Unauthorized copying of copyrighted software or proprietary files may also lead to proceedings in the civil court.)
12. Intentionally introducing computer viruses in to the College computer facilities.
13. Failing to obey established guidelines for any networks or systems used both inside and outside the College. Responsibility for obtaining guidelines for external networks rests with the user.
14. Interfering with the operation of any Geneva computer facilities by deliberately attempting to degrade or disrupt system performance, stored information/data, security, or administrative operations.
15. Students are not permitted to have more than 30 messages (or 200 kilobytes) in their INBOX at any time. If you do have more than the allowed limit, the System Administrator reserves the right to remove the messages. You should also NOT send large picture files, as those fill up the available disk space very quickly.

Violations will result in having Internet privileges revoked and/or suspended as well as facing a judicial hearing.

Technology Services is a group on campus that provides for all Telecommunications, Administrative Computing, Academic Computing, Audio-Visual, Networking, Mail, and duplicating needs for the campus. TELEPHONE SERVICE

Basic telephone service is available to all resident students. Basic service includes two telephones per floor and includes local calling. 

TELEPHONES

Cordless telephones interfere with PBX operation, interfere with wireless computer communications in Clarke, Arms and Young, and are prohibited.

LOCAL and LONG DISTANCE SERVICES

To activate a long distance telephone account, you must sign up for this service in the reception area of Old Main upon. Each student with an activated telephone service will be assigned an authorization code. Once a student has received an authorization code, calls can be made from any campus telephone. Long distance calling rates are available at sign up. Returning students must renew their accounts every year by signing a new agreement upon their return to campus. Directory assistance calls are only available to long distance subscribers.

TELEPHONE ABUSE

Authorization codes are not to be shared. Using another person′s code is fraud. Person′s committing fraud will receive a financial penalty and be held responsible for all calls made. Obscene, abusive, and harassing telephone calls are illegal. Students indulging in illegal activities will be punished in accordance with the behavior standards of Geneva College and the law.

It is illegal to charge anything to any telephone number that is owned by the college. This includes, but is not limited to any telephone calls, voicemail services, telephone cards, 800, 888, 900 billed services, accepted collect calls, and pre-paid cards. This is a finable offense of $200 per instance in addition to any charges that the college incurs.

EXTERNAL INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS

It is not permitted to connect your computer to an external Internet Service Provider while the computer is on campus.

E-MAIL AND INTERNET ACCESS SERVICE

Basic e-mail and Internet access is provided to all students. Computer labs feature Microsoft Windows 7 with Microsoft Office 2007 software. Students living in Clarke Hall, McKee Hall, Memorial Hall, Pearce Hall, or Kerr Building will be provided with a direct Ethernet network connection in their rooms.  Wireless is available in all residence halls and most of the academic buildings on campus.
